The Prompt
Food Truck Finder is a mobile App that helps users locate food trucks they love, explore new food trucks nearby, see menus of those food trucks, order food online.
Understanding The Prompt
Food Truck Finder is a customer-facing (B2C) mobile App that helps users locate food trucks they love, explore new food trucks nearby, see menus and order food from the food trucks.
In order to create an MVP (Most Viable Product), I pre set the target users' scenario as within New York City, which helps me better identify and analyze the problem.
RESEARCH 01
Observations
-
Food trucks sell fast, cheap and convenient foods and beverages such as gyros, hot dogs, bottled water etc.
-
They always appear in a dense distribution within one district, selling relatively similar products.
-
Some food trucks' appearances can be very similar, which makes it hard to distinguish them from the others.
-
Food trucks can be very busy with long waiting lines at lunch time.

RESEARCH 02
Competitive Analysis
According to the brief, there are three main screens of FTF: Feed, Search Result, and Food Truck Profile. Therefore, I took a look at similar screens of competitive products.
Based on the similarity of functionality, I selected four products: Yelp, Ritual, Opentable, and Google Maps.

Challenges
Challenges

-
Food trucks are relatively smaller and harder to locate precisely. Considering the situation they're always in a dense distribution, it is also hard to distinguish one from the others only by the name.
-
Food trucks located on the busy pedestrian makes it hard for picking up the right meals.
-
Food trucks are roving, which means they don't always stay in one place or always open to the customers.
Goals
-
To make it easy to distinguish a food truck.
-
A user-friendly ordering & picking up experience.
-
Proper indications of the availability.
RESEARCH 03
User Persona
Before sketching out specific interfaces, creating user persona helps me summarize my understanding of the character archetype that was illustrated in the prompt.
In this case, the 2 types of primary users for Food Truck Finder:
-
Local people who want to order food on food trucks
-
Tourists who want to explore the area by trying out local food.

Insight
Different user groups have different primary needs.
-
I set dynamic contents for first-time user and returning user, in order to provide them what they want primarily.

Insight
Food truck status and information is complicated, and they're updating seamlessly.
-
According to the research, the status of food trucks can be various, which differs it from restaurants.
-
Therefore, I set a few indicators on the map screen, with a food truck logo popping up above the truck icon, which also helps to distinguish certain food truck.

Insight
Many users would use the App outdoors, which addresses the concern of efficiency and safety.
-
I add pre-built filters to the global search bar, in order to provide a more approachable and assistive experience
